After debating the potential for frame longevity, even after repairs, we decided it was in our best interest to scrap the whole frame due to such heavy corrosion.

Instead, we discovered this hot-dipped galvanized frame for our YJ. We still haven’t determined what engine and tranny set up we’ll be using, but this frame is a great foundation to start with and should serve for many years to come.

We’re not going to spend a lot of time on this subject. Just take the vehicle apart if you want to rebuild it.

Disconnect everything on the engine, pull it out using a hoist, remove the transmission, the drive lines, and everything connected to them.

I will tell you to use some common sense. I purchased a bunch of plastic tubs from Menard’s so I could keep components and accessories categorically stored so I can find them, and their fasteners, when I’m ready for them, later. I used lots of plastic bags, and lots of labels. For now, everything is stacked neatly in my garage, save for the engine, tranny, body panels, tub, seats, and frame.

Most importantly, I’d like to know that you can do this yourself. If you’re like me, (the rugged individualist = isolationalist ;) you don’t have any friends that live within 500 miles of you that would help you with such a task. (I’ve got friends, just not the Jeep kind) With an engine hoist, hand tools, lots of PB Blaster rust eating fluid, and some elbow grease you can take one of these apart. An air compressor and tools make the job a lot easier if you can swing it. Frozen screws made need to be drilled out and crusty rusties might need to be cut out, but you get the picture. If not, I’ve added some here.

Please note that the professionals out there will probably laugh at me. Then they’ll cry for me. I’m a former commercial oilfield diver that reached early retirement, and now I’m a ceramic coatings applicator, not a 4WD specialist with a dedicated garage, lift, and all the trimmings you’ll find on a television show. Nonetheless, make no mistake, we’re going rebuild this Jeep Wrangler YJ so as to make it traversible intercontinentally . And we’re going to do it because it’s what I love to do, and what I want to do. It’s the journey, not the destination, and this is where the journey begins.

I’m open to any suggestions, criticisms, or tech tips you might post and provide.

Thank you for visiting.

I’m doing this blog so that my friends and you can make comments and suggestions throughout the process, so others can learn, and I can chronicle this what I believe will turn out to be a wonderful saga. This blog is just getting started, so please bear with the lack of content for the moment.

We can start off by telling you a little bit about our vehicle, a white colored Michigan 1994 Jeep Wrangler YJ, dubbed Sparticus by some Ragin Cajuns. He’s being rebuilt after 15 years of faithful service to its family and it’s time to “prestore” it so we don’t have to fully restore it later. It has faithfully served without issue, traveling throughout the United States, Mexico, Guatemala & Honduras. Not to mention tremendous activity in near the bayous and levies of southern Louisiana. These travels, and some grueling Michigan winters have given me enough reason to dismantle the vehicle fully, rebuild it, and make sure it is prepared for its next +20,000 mile expedition into South America.

It will take just a little time to produce the vehicle photos, categories for reconstruction, and assemble the blog so anyone can participate.
